TV and Mass Communication

 TV and Mass Communication

Today TV has become the most important mean of mass communication and surpass the other means such as newspaper, radio and film, in term of the number of people who need it. What are the functions of TV ? What are the interesting factors about TV ?

Before TV was known publicly in the late 1950’s, the common means of mass communication were newspaper, radio and film. Newspaper was cheap and people found it easily at bus / subway stattions or sidewalk vendors, but you did read the newspaper and you didn’t listen or watch it. Radio was cheap also and people heard news or listened to soft music broadcasted by a commercial broadcasting station, but you did listen the radio and you did’t watch it. Film was available at movie theater at every part of the city and you listened and watched the film, but who could afford to see film everyday in movie theater ? TV has an important factor to be more interesting than those of three means, because you can listen and watch at the same time at a very..very low cost.

The function of TV is not just as an entertaining media, but also as education, news, and information media. You can consider TV as entertaining media, because you can watch sport events such as football, basketball, baseball, tennis or boxing, or you can watch your favorite serial film, fun and game such as “Jeopardy”, or even you can watch an interesting commercial of Chrysler President Lee Iacocca advertising new cars and trucks. When you follow a “How to….” or “What if…” program, so it means that TV functions as an educational media.

TV functions as news media when you get your today’s weather forecast or just simply news about an important person such as “President Reagan’s smile while leaving Bethesda Naval Hospital after a general check-up”. Last but not least TV can be functioning as information media, in case you get an idea you have known it yet before such as “in what part of the world Iran is located”.

Many factors influence people’s decision to buy a TV set. First of all, you can feel that TV is better than radio because you can listen while you watch. Second, TV is broadcasted 24 hours a day, so you can turn it on whenever you want. Third, a TV set has lot of program, sometimes you can have more than 30 channels available. Fourth, if you are still not satisfied with the number of channels (choices), you can subscribe to cable-TV by paying few additional bucks. Fifth, if you want to see a film you are likely to see, just attach to the TV set a VCR (Video Cassette Recorder) and rent a video cassette “Peggy Sue Got Married” or “52 Pick-Up”. Sixth, if you are a computer hobbyist you can use a TV set as a video monitor of your computer. Seventh, if you are not satisfied with the quality of quantity of programs broadcasted in your own country, you can buy a DBS (Direct Broadcast Satellite) or people know it as a “dish”, so that you can catch your neighbor’s country program as much as you “dish” can catch.

We can conclude that TV is still a dominant vehicle for mass communication because of its advantageous feature. Even when TV is modified and called cable-TV, pay-TV or two-way TV, it is still a “TV”, isn’t it ?

Lha isaku mung boso Ibu, Melayu karo Betawi. Berarti kecerdasanku mung roto-2.
    Gimana dik Yon…, setuju…??

    Simbah,
Wah…nggak setuju.
